FAQs about outsource marketing

My available hours ‘per week’ does fluctuate according to demand and seasonality. The more notice I have of your requirements, the more likely I can accommodate them. Without the help of associates in the industry there is obviously a limit to my capacity, however, this lean business model means that we can reduce our overheads, keeping our services very affordable for clients.

That’s why if you need us to ‘scale things up,’ we would love the opportunity to discuss your requirements so that we can propose how Flex Marketing can collaborate with others to get bigger jobs done. Often this way of working can entail remaining your single point of contact so that we can be totally ‘across your project’.

It can be very difficult for new clients to know how long things will take. We can give you a rough idea based on our experience with other clients, however, first, we need to understand what types of things you would like us to undertake for you and get a feel for the way you work.

Quite often we find that clients know that they need to be doing “more with their marketing”, but are wanting advice on the ‘what’ they should be doing and this means that their package could evolve over time.

We usually have a couple of  suggestions –  we can dive straight into implementing a couple of things that you need help with so that we can start to get to know your business better and arrive at a position of being able to strategically advise you on your marketing OR we work together on preparing a marketing plan. The latter involves developing an implementation calendar for marketing to help identify the volume of work to be undertaken and therefore the hours required for an outsource marketing package.

Aside from the option to work with us on a marketing planning package at the same time as an outsource marketing package, we can also create a blended outsource marketing package for you that combines strategy with implementation – this is our most popular solution. Fractional marketing is a term that is becoming a popular way of describing the outsource marketing services that Flex Marketing has been offering for many years. You may have heard of a ‘Fractional CMO’ to describe the role of a senior marketing professional who helps a business with their marketing in a similar way to an in-house CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) with the main differences being that they are self-employed and they work only a fraction of the week for that business. Often their week will involve supporting multiple non-competing businesses in this way, sometimes adding up to full time hours. Fractional marketing professionals tend to be marketing generalists with a lot of experience across a broad range of sectors and areas of marketing. They are also likely to have strong leadership skills.

Fractional marketing solutions are a more viable option for businesses that are in a growth phase and can’t justify the expense of a full time senior marketer. They may have an in-house marketer with less experience and need to supplement this with senior input.

An outsourced or fractional marketer will support a business on an ongoing basis with their marketing. Flex Marketing has been working with clients in this way for several years – one client has been using our outsourced marketing services for over a decade! We represent your business in marketing matters – this is different to how an agency operates – we work client-side with you. This means that sometimes we will assist you with selecting and engaging agencies to undertake specialised work. We will then be the main day-to-day point of contact for them on your behalf to manage projects and tasks.

A fractional marketer will work ‘in the business’, a consultant usually doesn’t get involved with implementation – they will help with strategy or a specific project and move on. One important advantage for businesses using this fractional marketing solution is the increased chance of retaining access to marketing talent who has built up a wealth of knowledge about their business. An employee in a marketing team may look to move on every couple of years as they develop their career, whereas an entrepreneurial fractional marketing professional will be motivated to remain involved in their clients’ businesses because they are self-employed.

If we decide that having Flex Marketing provide you with a blend of marketing strategy and marketing implementation is the best option, then we will have a discussion about how much of each service within the agreed monthly hours you’ll likely need. This means that some of your package time can be spent working with you on planning and problem solving or work of a more challenging nature and the rest of the time can be spent implementing those plans or dealing with day to day marketing tasks.

Quite often 50% strategy and 50% implementation is a good place to start. To arrive at the monthly retainer cost in that 50:50 example, it would be 50% of the relevant strategy package cost and 50% of the relevant implementation package cost combined to be a blended package cost billed monthly.
